Earners of the Certified Association Executive have demonstrated, through experience and passing an exam, that they have practical experience in association management and executive level knowledge in defined competencies. Earners pledge to uphold codes of ethics and professional conduct. The CAE is maintained through ongoing association management professional development and leadership activities. The CAE Program is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
Job Overview
The ABC Heart of America chapter was formed in 1975 and is a pro-business association representing construction and construction-related firms across the states of Missouri and Kansas. The chapter has regional offices in Kansas City and Fenton, MO. Current membership stands at 270 members. The ABC Heart of America chapter operates as a 501c(6) organization and sponsors a 501c(3) ERISA training trust fund.
Position Summary
The President/CEO of ABC Heart of America serves as the chief staff officer and aides the Board of Directors in the formulation of the association’s vision, mission, goals, objectives and related policies; as well as strategic and operational leadership to ensure the strategic plan of the organization is implemented and followed. The President/CEO provides hands-on management in all areas of the Chapter including: membership value and development, employee relations and development, finance and accounting, internal and external communication, technology, facilities, and political, government and public relations. As the spokesperson and face of the Chapter, this position professionally represents the Chapter before both internal and external groups.
Essential Position Functions:
Board and Association
Plays the lead role in the implementation of the Chapter’s strategic plan. Monitors progress of objectives delegated to key staff to ensure completion.
Leads the entire human resources function. Recruits, hires, trains, engages, promotes, coaches, evaluates performance, develops and terminates staff in accordance with Chapter policies and all federal and state labor laws. Evaluates current competencies and performance measures to develop an effective team. Is responsible for overseeing and budgeting for all compensation and benefits.
Engages and communicates regularly with the Board of Directors to keep them apprised of progress towards established goals. Provides board with sufficient internal, economic, legislative and industry updates as well as structure to enable them to make sound decisions for the Chapter.
The President/CEO, as the Authorized Administrator, performs ministerial duties related to the day-to-day operations of the Training Trust. This includes, but is not limited to, evaluating and managing service providers hired and approved by the Trustees. The position ensures all parties are acting in compliance with ERISA, DOL standards, and state and federal apprenticeship guidelines, and ensures that all financial and operational policies and procedures are followed by chapter staff and various service providers in accordance with the professional services agreement between the ABC Heart of America and Apprenticeship Trust. The role also works as a liaison between the ABC Chapter Board and the Apprenticeship Trust Board.
Researches, proposes and implements changes to policies, by-laws, and programs approved by the Board of Directors that will improve the financial or value position of the Chapter.
Builds and maintains effective relationships with Chapter Officers, committees, task forces, trusts, etc.
Represent the chapter at all National meetings and national association business.
Keep the Chapter Chair and Board of Directors apprised of any updates and changes at the National association level
Internal Relations
Works in conjunction with the Budget and Finance Committee to develop annual budgets for both the Chapter as well as the Education Trust to ensure financial stability. Collaborates with Treasurer to assess and improve the financial status of the Association. With the Treasurer, authorizes all invoices, financial statements, and expenses. Reviews and authorizes contracts as approved in the budget or as an ad hoc expenditure approved by the Executive Board.
Ensures collection of all membership dues.
Champions an exceptional member service culture by providing staff with the training, technology, equipment, facilities and support to provide cooperative and efficient solutions to members. Proposes recommendations for improvement or purchase to the Board and implements as appropriate.
Maintain current awareness of issues affecting the construction industry and the merit shop in Missouri and Kansas.
Membership Relations
Is responsible for membership growth and retention by providing value and enhanced services. Uses various mediums to communicate and drive the value proposition to membership. Reaches out to make and cultivate relationships with membership to improve member satisfaction.
Proposes, coordinates and presents high-quality and relevant content to membership events and activities to cultivate member competencies. Researches legislation, data and trends in the industry and interprets implication to members. Recommends best practices.
Maintains a vigorous recruitment program for new members in all areas of Chapter jurisdiction.
External Relations
Passionate advocate for the 90% of the US construction industry that chooses to work merit shop
Networks with, monitors and/or participates in other industry associations, commissions, professional networks, governmental agencies, legislative bodies, etc. to monitor economic, government, industry and public and private sector activities. Maintains contact with personnel to educate and garner support for industry initiatives impacting Chapter and its members.
Takes a lead role in Construction industry advocacy issues. Have the ability to share the merit shop industry's story in a credible and passionate way that enhances the business climate and adds value to ABC's members.
May be involved in political campaigns, PAC and organizational fundraising.
Experience and Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, Marketing, Construction Management, Engineering, Communications or similar field is preferred.
Minimum 8 years of progressive leadership experience required with some experience in executing strategic business initiatives.
Previous construction, engineering or architectural industry experience.
Previous business/membership development experience using a variety of mediums (newsletters, websites, social media, etc.), particularly in a non-profit organization or association.
As a merit shop advocate, has a solid understanding of the current construction industry environment.

Ability and willingness to travel to National Conferences throughout the year as well as across the two-state region to meet with members, prospects, and industry stakeholders.
