Aerospace America, the flagship media outlet of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), is seeking a Staff Reporter to join our team.
We’re looking for a dynamic, curious, ambitious and detail-oriented journalist to join our team. This position will be focused on covering defense aerospace, from emerging technologies to research spending. It will mean heading to Congress to track budget developments, covering defense trade shows to meet the companies competing for work and interviewing military officials about emerging programs.
What We're Looking For:
We’re seeking a natural collaborator who enjoys working with other members of our team, which includes a wide roster of freelance contributors in addition to our staff reporter and editors. An ideal candidate will find the emerging technology angle on big stories and be able to write quickly and cleanly. A successful story will cut through jargon to describe complex technology in plain language.
We welcome candidates who have not covered aerospace before, but a technology or defense reporting background is a plus.
What You’ll Do:
Produce daily online stories that engage our aerospace technology-focused audience.
Collaborate with our reporters and editors to plan and shape coverage.
Pitch and pursue original story ideas.
Cover defense-related events, including trade shows and AIAA events.
Contribute in-depth features and other content to our quarterly magazine.
What You’ll Bring:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Minimum 1 year of editorial experience at a magazine, newspaper, or digital news outlet.
Strong reporting, writing, and organizational skills.
Interest in aerospace, defense, and emerging technologies.
Why Join AIAA?

Short-term & long-term disability coverage.
Education benefits and professional development opportunities.
A hybrid work environment (two in-office days per week, three remote).
