About the National Maritime Historical Society
The National Voice of our Maritime Heritage
The Beginnings: The National Maritime Historical Society has its roots in a small, but determined, group of maritime preservationists united in the effort to save the Kaiulani, an 1899 merchant barque and the last American-built square-rigger to round Cape Horn. When they could not save this ship, even with the support of the president of the United States and the president of the Philippines, where she served her final days, it was clear that America needed an organization dedicated to promoting the country's rich maritime heritage and preserving her historic ships.
America's Voice of our Maritime Heritage: Founded in 1963, the National Maritime Historical Society became that voice of our maritime heritage, pursuing its mission as a membership organization dedicated to educating Americans young and old about our nation's extraordinary maritime accomplishments and their continuing relevance for shaping our national prosperity and cultural vitality.
Sea History: Since 1972, NMHS has published Sea History magazine, the pre-eminent journal in the maritime heritage field. Each issue carries fascinating articles about key events and people in our maritime past, stories of everyday sailors past and present, news of marine archaeology and what it has to teach us, updates on historic and significant ships in danger of disappearing forever, book reviews and a calendar of events happening around the country. For more than half a century, NMHS has been telling the stories, great and small, that make up the wondrous panorama of our maritime history. Hundreds of thousands of readers over the years have discovered in the pages of Sea History magazine a treasure-trove of stories that captivate, inspire, and above all, educate Americans about the vital role the sea—and those who have sailed upon it. The lessons that our seafaring history teaches, of courage, heroism, ingenuity, self-reliance, and resourcefulness, are timeless.
NMHS Website: In the age of the computer and the cell phone and of social media, it is more important than ever to use these resources to bring those lessons to young people, possibly even to inspire them to look to the sea for their choice of a career. This was what the Society had in mind when it launched its redesigned website, www.seahistory.org, early in 2018. NMHS has worked hard to develop it into an easily-accessible, inviting resource that brings the stories of our maritime heritage to life in a way that is meaningful for adults, but that also engages kids of all ages in the learning experience of a lifetime. Today, all issues of Sea History magazine, along with a comprehensive hyperlinked index, can be accessed online.
Book Publishing: Through Sea History Press, NMHS has published reference works on maritime museums, historic ships and classics of the sail training and historic ship movement.
Educational Programs: The Society has a long history of involvement in maritime education initiatives, like its monthly NMHS Seminar Series featuring noted authors, historians and artists who celebrate the maritime history of our area and abroad. In order to engage students in learning maritime history, NMHS awards cash scholarships for students who complete a project on a maritime topic for National History Day. This is a highly regarded year-long educational program for middle- and high-school students that involve more than half a million students in a competition to prepare a history project on a designated theme, culminating in state and national competitions. NMHS gives out prizes in 25 states and is increasing the number yearly. Sea History for Kids is a popular feature in the magazine that tells the important stories of our maritime past in an engaging, kid-friendly way, and seeks to inspire young people to explore maritime careers through profiles of individuals who work in interesting maritime fields. It is now available online in an engaging format aimed at middle school students.
Maritime Library & Archives: With funding from a Maritime Heritage Grant and NMHS donors, NMHS has partnered with the Westchester Library System (WLS) and Hendrick Hudson Free Library (HHFL) to catalog and, in some cases digitize, our 8,000 plus books. The WLS and HHFL are cataloging our collection using WorldCat, the world's largest network of library content and services. WorldCat lets readers search the collections of libraries not only in their own community but thousands more around the world. Already readers are borrowing NMHS books, enabling more access to maritime information. Our archivist is organizing our 3,000-piece archives collection, saving for future generations this treasure of maritime scholarship.
Maritime Film: The National Maritime Historical Society actively supports film production on a broad range of maritime related topics, including biographical tribute videos highlighting the work of outstanding individuals and organizations involved in the preservation of our maritime heritage. The National Maritime Historical Society has also partnered with Voyage Digital Media to produce the six-part documentary series Sails Over Ice and Seas: The Life and Times of the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey. Ernestina-Morrissey is America's story. Now a National Historic Landmark owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and stewarded by the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, she first joined thousands of her sister ships as she was launched from the shores of Essex, Massachusetts in 1894.
Community Partnerships & Involvement: NMHS plays a significant role in broadening knowledge about our maritime heritage through maritime heritage conferences and events, partnerships with other maritime organizations, and the formation of numerous maritime groups. Since its beginnings, NMHS has been an active supporter and promoter of the maritime heritage community. It played a key role in the establishment of the Council of American Maritime Museums, the American Society of Marine Artists, the American Ship Trust, the World Ship Trust, the Hudson River Maritime Museum, and the National Maritime Alliance Act of 1979, which provided millions of dollars for historic ships, monuments and programs. In 2013, NMHS was recognized with the Maine Maritime Museum's Mariner of the Year Award for 50 years of excellence in maritime education, preservation and advocacy.
Awards: The Society is in the unique position of bringing national recognition to the extraordinary work of individuals and institutions and on innovative programs and effective leaders in the maritime heritage field, both at its New York Awards Dinner and National Maritime Awards Dinner in Washington, DC, focusing the public spotlight on those who have contributed so much to the cause of maritime history and preservation. With our awards we can demonstrate the positive strides being made in preserving our important maritime heritage and encourage others to follow the example set by our honorees. This serves as an incentive to those working in the field. The NMHS Distinguished Service Award is presented to individuals and organizations who, through their effort and creativity, have made outstanding contributions to our maritime heritage. Past recipients include broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite; media mogul and philanthropist Ted Turner; New York Times bestselling adventure novelist Clive Cussler; the oceanographer most known for the discoveries of the wreck of the RMS Titanic Robert Ballard, and many others.
Advocacy: The National Maritime Historical Society continues to support and promote the work of the maritime heritage community, and bring the message of the importance of our seafaring past to the wider world. We work with the National Maritime Alliance to advocate in Washington for funding for the maritime heritage community. When individual groups work together on achieving mutual goals, our successes multiply and our reach goes farther
