| About Robin Hood Robin Hood is New York City’s largest poverty-fighting organization. In addition to funding 200+ of the most effective nonprofits serving New Yorkers experiencing poverty, we amplify financial support with a range of management assistance. Building on more than 30+ years of experience, Robin Hood is expanding our impact with an explicit focus on lifting families sustainably and measurably out of poverty through influencing policy, raising our thought leadership profile, importing and exporting effective ideas and strategies nationally, and building new collaborations with strategic partners. Position Overview Robin Hood funds more than 200 of the most effective poverty-fighting programs in the five boroughs of New York City. In addition to our core grant making, Robin Hood provides management and technical assistance to help groups build capacity, and our Governance and Board Placement Program is a key piece of this work. Through this service, we connect talented individuals who are interested in dedicating their time and skills to the boards of organizations funded by Robin Hood. We work closely with these partners to assess and prioritize their strategic board needs and develop initiatives to strengthen the performance of their boards through trainings, events and access to consulting support. The Director, Governance and Board Placement will develop and manage overall strategy for all governance related activities including board candidate recruitment, customized governance trainings, advice on committee structure and governance processes, cultivation with corporate partners and/or affinity groups, and development of resources/tools for Robin Hood funded community partners. Responsibilities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: - Design and develop an overall strategy for Robin Hood’s governance work with an emphasis on expanding board recruitment sources.
- Collaborate with the Senior Manager, Governance and Board Placement, in identifying and connecting appropriate board candidates with Robin Hood Development activities, including Family Philanthropy, and relevant event invitations.
- Collaborate with Senior Manager of Corporate in the cultivation of corporate partnerships for identification of potential board candidates.
- Design and implement a board candidate evaluation tool to formally assess board recruitment needs for community partners.
- Recruit prospective board candidates for community partners and manage them through the interview, screening, and matching process.
- Organize and present recruitment pitches at corporations and professional associations.
- Develop formal recruitment plan to expand pipeline of qualified board candidates.
- Partner with Robin Hood’s senior staff, development team, board of directors and leadership council members as appropriate to develop outreach strategies and solicit potential candidates for community partners’ boards.
- Contribute and ensure accuracy of relevant board recruitment data for inclusion in internal and external communications.
- Lead efforts to define metrics for board recruitment and assess the impact of candidates placed on community partners’ boards.
- Monitor innovations and best practices in non-profit board recruitment and governance; share learnings with program team.
- Work with other philanthropies and funders to promote Robin Hood’s model of engaged grant making supported by capacity building services; identify partnership opportunities.
- Participate in other general functions and duties of the Robin Hood, incorporating our guiding principles of humanity/proximity, Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and innovation and risk.
The Director, Governance and Board Placement is on the Management Assistance team and will report to the Managing Director, Management Assistance. Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree required
- 10-15 years of professional experience, with a demonstrated passion for poverty-fighting work in NYC.
