What the Program Manager, Communications/Thriving Earth Exchange (TEX) does

The Thriving Earth Exchange is an AGU Program that leverages Earth and space science for societal benefit. Thriving Earth Exchange helps community leaders and scientists work together to use science to advance local priorities related to sustainability, resilience, and environmental justice.

The Program Manager, Communications will develop communication strategies and messaging to help Thriving Earth Exchange communicate to its constituencies, allies, and partners in ways that advance program goals.  In addition, they will ensure that Thriving Earth Exchange communications are consistent with AGU’s mission, vision, values and strategic plan by working closely with AGU’s Communications, Marketing and Media Relations (CMM) team.  They will collect and disseminate Thriving Earth Exchange project news via a variety of media channels. Thriving Earth Exchange launches about 50 projects a year and collecting and communicating milestones and news from those projects will be a significant part of the work.

• Manages day-to-day communications (50%).
  • Manages all project communications, including receiving news and updates from projects, deciding if, how, and with whom to share those updates, adapting the updates, and sharing those updates.
  • Designs, implements and maintains systems and tools that allow regular, efficient communication about individual project milestones.
  • Ensures the quality and consistency of all materials that represent the Thriving Earth Exchange program or individual projects.
  • Ensures communications assets have appropriate permission for use and collects/maintains permissions from volunteers and projects.
  • Maintains and updates content on the Thriving Earth Exchange
  • Manages Thriving Earth Exchange social media account and works closely with AGU social media managers on Thriving Earth Exchange-related content.
  • Manages the e-newsletter (manage an external contractor who produces the monthly newsletter), including content, subscriber updates and internal review processes in accordance with AGU’s CMM department.
• Develops and implements Thriving Earth Exchange’s communication strategy (20%)
  • Works with partners, fellow Thriving Earth Exchange staff, and AGU CMM staff to recruit program volunteers. This will include developing new content and graphics as needed.
  • Develops and implements communication activities that build enthusiasm and support for the Thriving Earth Exchange, Community Science overall, and contributes to the cultural changes in science described in the AGU strategic plan and the Thriving Earth Exchange mission and vision.
• Teaches and consults about communications (15%):
  • Leads the collaborative development and delivery of instruction, guides and templates that help project teams communicate about their projects.
  • Provides instruction on communications strategies as part of training and onboarding for new volunteers with each new cohort launch, typically on a quarterly basis.
  • Consults, as requested, with project teams on their communications challenges or aspirations.
• Contributes to AGU’s overall communication strategies and activities (15%).
  • Coordinates with AGU CMM to elevate appropriate items from Thriving Earth Exchange.
  • Participates in regular AGU communications and editorial meetings and builds strong partnership with AGU CMM.
  • Helps develop and implement AGU communication strategies and goals.
  • Helps Thriving Earth organize our communications to advance AGU communication goals.
• Participates in regular program evaluation and improvement.
• Other duties as assigned.

What the  Program Manager, Communications/Thriving Earth Exchange (TEX) brings to the team

• 5+ years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, or equivalent education and work experience.
• Experience working in media and/or media outreach, especially related to science and/or community engagement.
• Experience coaching and mentoring.
• Experience in programs that engage volunteers, offer training, and build collaborative networks.
• Experience managing communications across multiple countries and in multiple languages by working with translators. Ability to speak multiple languages is not required.
• Ability to write concise, clear and engaging descriptions of technical topics.
• Ability to bring creativity and originality to communications planning and implementation.
• Experience managing communications across a distributed team with varied roles and responsibilities.
• Professional experience using social media.
• Ability to use web and communications software required for the job, including the ability to learn new software packages (e.g., Sitecore and WordPress)
• Skill and facility in working in a matrixed organization.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and culturally appropriately with people from many backgrounds and in many contexts, including great listening skills as well as the ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
• Ability to represent the program and AGU well in public speaking roles: presentations, panels, interviews, etc.
• Ability to interpret and apply program policies and values and make good decisions without direct daily oversight.
• Ability to follow through on commitments and accept ownership of responsibilities and with utmost professionalism.
• Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines/requirements for accuracy and quality and/or fast pace.
• Ability to exercise highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
• Ability to manage contract workers (e.g., newsletter editor, contractors for short-term initiatives).
