SmithBucklin, a 100 percent employee-owned association management company, is hiring a CEO to work closely with the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees for its clients, Door and Hardware Institute (DHI) and its foundation, Door Security & Safety Foundation (DSSF)DHI is an association proudly serving door security and safety professionals, and the dynamic companies they represent, in the non-residential construction industry. Through education, advocacy, accreditation and facilitated networking, DHI provides members with the collective intelligence to meet the life safety and security needs of their customers. It is with great pride that DHI's founders later created DSSF, to deliver education and awareness about the expertise of the industry to its stakeholders, furthering the critical awareness of how DHI members protect building occupants. Both organizations have aligned to stand up for issues surrounding school security, and advocate for healthy solutions during COVID-19 such as touchless hardware, while providing new ways to deliver their critical services that cannot be found in any other association.

DHI is seeking an accomplished CEO with demonstrated success in strategic execution, operations planning and oversight, financial management, fundraising and advocacy. The CEO will be responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial well-being of both organizations and accountable for the overall success in DHI and DSSF achieving their missions. They will work closely with the DHI Board of Directors and DSSF Board of Trustees to implement and manage all policies, programs, services and practices. Success will be measured by one's ability to provide strategic leadership, ensure operational efficiency, deliver service excellence, grow membership and contributions, grow strategic partnerships, and create meaningful new value for DHI and DSSF. This role reports internally to the Vice President, Business + Trade Industry Practice at SmithBucklin; and is directly accountable to the DHI Executive Committee for achievement of outcomes, mission impact, volunteer strength and service delivery.

What You Will Do

• STRATEGIC EXECUTION & OPERATIONS PLANNING. Advise, guide and support the DHI Board of Governors and DSSF Board of Trustees in executing their long term strategy and annual goals. Provide expertise, develop, present and recommend operational plans & programs to the board and committees that deliver the desired outcomes.
• FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT. Plan, direct, monitor, and analyze association finances in order to achieve their financial objectives. Ensure funding is available and DHI and DSSF assets are used efficiently and responsibly. Develop annual operating budget. Plan, direct, monitor, analyze and communicate association finances, including annual budgets, monthly statements (including interpretation and forecasting), and investments.
• Provide governance support and leadership expertise to the DHI and DSSF Boards and committees. Provide onboarding and guide and mentor board members in their volunteer role. Establish policy and provide overall direction for business.
• OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT. Provide administrative oversight of ongoing association operations. Monitor, evaluate and optimize performance of association programs against goals. Act as the main liaison between the leadership and staff, lead committees or ensure that leadership is in place, coordinate and advise volunteers, report to and communicate with the DHI and DSSF Boards to obtain direction, establish objectives and implement strategies.
• RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT. Manage relationships with board members and volunteers. Facilitate the establishment of positive relationships between SmithBucklin staff, DHI and DSSF constituents. Apply SmithBucklin client stewardship principles and alignment with volunteer leaders.
• PEOPLE MANAGEMENT. Manage and motivate a matrix staff team. Assign and supervise work, evaluate performance, and develop individuals
• MANAGE ASSOCIATION and FOUNDATION GROWTH. Oversee development, implementation, marketing and evaluation of programs and services designed to grow both organizations, create member and contributor value, advance priorities, and grow non-dues revenue. Oversee and manage support to DHI's chapter network and the relationship with DHI Canada.
• EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION MANAGEMENT. Oversee and manage DHI's robust education and certification programs, including certification administration, schools and classes, and events. Develop and implement strategies to grow the core value proposition found in DHI and DSSF's education and certification offerings.
• MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS. Oversee and manage DHI and DSSF communications and publications. Set the communications and marketing tone and drive effective messages in sync with both organizations' culture and the industry, speaking appropriately to the many key audiences and stakeholders. Oversee management of DHI's magazine, publications and digital offerings, including content strategy and sales strategy.
• ADVOCACY MANAGEMENT. Oversee and manage a comprehensive advocacy program to promote, protect and advance DHI public policy positions at the state and local level. Assign and supervise work, including DHI advocacy staff and contract lobbyists. Oversee and manage the development of public policy positions in conjunction with the Advocacy Committee for approval by the DHI President. Coordinate advocacy public relations effort with DSSF. Oversee the DSSF's complimentary public relationship campaign with external PR firm relationship and key initiatives, which are also tied to marketing and communications for DHI and DSSF. Generate, nurture and lead relationships with allied organizations and create loose knit coalitions and/or formal partnerships to support advocacy and public relations efforts.
• PARTNER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT. Identify, contract and manage partners required to execute on the boards' strategic directives, include such partnerships as law firms, contract lobbyists, public relations/communications firms, investment firms, etc. Recommend and review service provider selection as required to meet client organization-specific needs. Manage service provider contract administration including setting performance metrics for desired outcomes.

• Someone with vision and purpose that has a history of painting a compelling picture of the vision and strategy of an organization and motivating others to action

Qualifications

• A minimum of 10 years of experience in leadership and/or management roles within the not-for-profit sector, preferably with a similar trade association
• Experience as an Executive Director, COO, Chief of Staff or the top P&L leader of an organization
• Demonstrated passion for the mission of his/her organization, his/her professional community and cultivating a continuous learning culture
• High level of strategic and financial management experience
• Is known as a collaborator and someone who effectively builds and enhances relationships. Is well-respected in the industry
• Relationship building skills to cultivate and maintain engagement with member organizations and volunteers
• An inspirational leader, with a history of leading a staff and managing their professional growth and development
• Effective presentation and public speaking skills are required
• An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred
• CAE (Certified Association Executive) is preferred
