The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is in search of a motivated and hard working Government Affairs Associate to join our team in Arlington Heights, Illinois!
BASIC FUNCTION The Government Affairs Associate works to analyze and influence policy proposals at the state and federal levels. This position works with the department’s other Government Affairs Associates to execute ASPS policy tracking, analysis and drafting of comments; provide recommendations on organizational responses to key issues; and execute the operational work of ASPS grassroots initiatives for all state level policy. The Government Affairs Associate also supports federal advocacy and key ASPS initiatives, including PlastyPAC, the Legislative Advocacy Committee, the ASPS Advocacy Summit, and advocacy publications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
ISSUE TRACKING, ANALYSIS AND ENGAGEMENT Work with other Government Affairs Associates to monitor and report on legislative and regulatory activity impacting plastic surgery
Work with other Government Affairs Associates to write comment letters to key state policymaking audiences when priority issues arise. Support federal advocacy as-needed
Work with other Government Affairs Associates to create resources – such as talking points, issue briefs, member communications, and key contact identification processess – that activate physician members at the grassroots level
Respond to individual ASPS physician member policy inquiries from states in your portfolio
ADVOCACY AND GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS Manage grassroots advocacy initiatives for the states in your portfolio
ADVOCACY PROGRAM SUPPORT Support Director, Government Affairs Associate, and Washington, DC-based consultants in the execution of biennial ASPS Advocacy Summit and biennialregional fly-ins
POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE Support staffing the PlastyPAC Board of Governors:
Support exectution of the PlastyPAC Member Benefits Program as needed
LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE Support the staff liaison of the ASPS Legislative Advocacy Committee
ASPS PUBLICATION CONTRIBUTIONS Write weekly Activity Updates to ASPS leadership on key developments federally and in your states. Contribute to monthly Activity Updates to the Legislative Advocacy Committee
Work with other Government Affairs Associates to develop summary reports of ASPS advocacy work to be shared with ASPS physician members following the end of state legislative sessions and the end of the year
Contribute to stories in ASPS publications on state policy and advocacy
EXTERNAL RELATIONS Work with Health Policy Manager and Government Affairs Associate to staff the ASPS AMA delegation and the Plastic Surgery Caucus
Participate with your Government Affiars Associate colleague in the Truth in Advertising Coalition, the Health Coalition on Liability and Access, the Trauma Coalition, the Ambulatory Surgical Coalition and the Stop Medical Taxes Coalition

Education: Bachelor Degree in political science, public policy, health administration, or health related field. Communications training with political/policy experience and/or an advanced degree in related field desired.
Experience: At least two to three years direct experience in any or all of the following:
