Independence Public Media of Philadelphia is pivoting from a media maker to a media funder and seeks a talented and dynamic leader to serve as its Founding President and to guide and steward the Independence Public Media Foundation (IPMF).
Independence Public Media formally operated WYBE Channel 35 for almost 30 years in the Greater Philadelphia market. WYBE Channel 35 provided an alternative vision for public media and represented low-income people, women, and people of color as staff, curators, and audiences, and their stories formed the core of WYBE's content. Independence Public Media's Board decided in June 2017 to form a Foundation after it received a one-time payment of $131.5 million in proceeds from the Federal Communications Commission auction of television spectrum in exchange for relinquishing its broadcast license. The Foundation will have an estimated annual grant-making budget between $5 and $6 million and will begin its grant-making programs during the fiscal year that ends June 30, 2019. As the Foundation builds its infrastructure, it will likely use intermediaries during the first grant cycle.
IPMF funds and supports media and related programs that strengthen and connect diverse voices and lead to greater understanding across communities in Greater Philadelphia.
Citizens of Greater Philadelphia will be able to create and distribute information, ideas and stories that foster shared understanding and mutual respect, an engaged and informed citizenry, and dynamic, thriving communities. IPMF will work toward these goals in several ways, which will accomplish the following outcomes:
Neighborhood, community, ethnic, and grassroots media organizations and outlets will have the tools and capabilities needed to connect with their communities and each other;
Residents young and old will have abundant opportunities to master digital media skills as both consumers and producers;
Legacy media organizations will be encouraged to reflect the diverse demographics of the region in their governance, employee base, content creation, and audience reach; and
The Philadelphia region will be recognized as a hotbed for creative media makers.
The Founding President will oversee the strategic and operational management of IPMF—from grant making to managing its day-to-day activities—in collaboration with the Board through its committees and meeting structures, as well as through more informal channels.
The Founding President will operationalize the Strategic Framework Report, will lead the Foundation with its first rounds of grant making, and will develop a responsive and dynamic grant portfolio. The Founding President will need to engage the region's many ethnic and geographic communities, media makers, trainers, and outlets to solicit input and feedback to yield a robust grant pipeline. The Founding President also must connect and leverage the resources and expertise of outside, complementary, and collaborative organizations to support IPMF's activities. Through these efforts, the Founding President will build IPMF's reputation as a national thought leader in the public media space.
