Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc., was founded over a century ago, before Israel was a state, and before women could vote. Since that time, the organization has remained unwavering in its commitment to women’s health and well-being, to Israel, and to Jewish values and continuity. But while Hadassah’s heritage and mission remain as strong as ever, the role of women and Jewish culture here and in Israel, has evolved over time. Hadassah is a volunteer organization that inspires a passion for, and commitment to, its partnership with the land and people of Israel. It enhances the health of people worldwide through its support of medical care and research at the Hadassah Medical Organization in Jerusalem. Hadassah empowers its members and supporters, as well as youth in Israel and America, through opportunities for personal growth, education, advocacy and Jewish continuity.
In partnership with a lay Coordinator and a team of lay leaders, the Member & Unit Services Division is responsible for supporting and strengthening the national grassroots structure of the organization and its leadership. Through the coordinated and collaborative efforts of three departments - Membership, Leadership and Organization - the Division oversees member recruitment, retention. leadership and unit operations by supporting activities and programs of the Chapters and Regions.
Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, Inc. seeks a proven, dynamic and inspiring strategic leader with superior relationship skills and demonstrated success in building capacity and increasing stakeholder engagement to become its Director of Member and Unit Services. The successful candidate must have an authentic passion for the mission, top notch management skills, demonstrated success as an engaging leader and be a highly articulate communicator skilled at making a compelling case for support.
Working in partnership with the President, CEO, Board of Directors, volunteer leaders and the full membership team, the new Director will build a multi-faceted national strategy and operation, and direct the team in implementing all related activities. This multi-dimension strategy will increase engagement, participation and impact of members and leaders across the spectrum of life stages and interests, ensuring that Hadassah’s mission and programs will be supported and sustained for future generations. It will also optimize the servicing of units and the units’ operations.
The Director will build on existing efforts and thoughtfully and intentionally pursue bold new opportunities to diversify Hadassah’s member base and exhance leadership opportunities by promoting Hadassah to new audiences and prospects, by generating interest and support for the organization, and by forging new relationships and leveraging current ones to achieve annual goals.
The successful Director will possess exceptional planning and management skills, as well as experience (and commitment to) developing and maintaining productive partnerships with active volunteer leaders, partners and colleagues. Experience in supervising a large staff, preferably national, is a requirement, as s/he will work in a large environment requiring collaboration with other top level professionals. S/he will possess an intellectual and emotional curiosity and maturity, understanding, and enthusiasm for the work of Hadassah.
The leadership seeks a visionary candidate with an entrepreneurial approach who can thrive in a complex environment, developing a strategy and the execution of plans simultaneously. The Director will report to, and work closely with, the CEO and will serve on the Directors Group and the Synergy Group (with Division Coordinators). The position is based in Hadassah’s New York City headquarters with team members located in New York and in the field covering 17 distinct geographic areas.
Leadership, Strategy and Engagement
Create a vision for the division that is in line with the current strategic plan of the organization;
Working in partnership with the CEO and volunteer leaders, design and implement a sophisticated national strategy that integrates all engagement tools and that will generate short-term results as well as sustainable long-term growth;
Develop strategic, collaborative and innovative campaigns and programs that include ways to: engage current and new members and deepen and diversify the member base; promote Hadassah to new audiences and prospects to generate interest and support for the organization;
Expand and diversify member and unit engagement by integrating successful strategies with the creation of bold new initiatives; work with team to increase engaged members and leaders in the regions year over year;
Provide strong direction and management for the team, including the effective and thoughtful managing of systems, processes, and measurements to monitor, project, and guide activities and results;
Build consensus throughout the country and gain commitment to support the vision and direction;
Work closely with the CEO, volunteer leaders and membership team to articulate the case for each program as a priority;
Collaborating closely with the marketing team on all membership-related marketing materials and communications;
Carefully monitor the costs associated with activities and ensure that internal resources are appropriately utilized to achieve greater scale and impact; develop an annual plan and budget for the division;
Work with field units to support volunteers responsible for leadership training and development;
Work with units to strengthen and empower operations in the country; determine appropriate space needs and oversee the revenue sharing process in collaboration with Finance and Development;
Work collaboratively with other Hadassah divisions to leverage the division’s impact;
Work with the regions and units to create coordinated delivery of services and effective communication;
Work with volunteers and staff to build a strong leadership development capacity;
Travel to local Hadassah units to understand needs and be responsive to them;
Serve on Directors Group and with Division Coordinator on Synergy Group.
Talent Management and Team-Building
Continue to build and lead the refinement and implementation of a highly energized and dynamic group of professionals in a complex environment;
Direct and manage a strong team of over 50+ professionals including: divisional, membership marketing and development, organization, and member servicing staff in NY as well as field staff in 17 geographic areas nationally;
Maintain a flexible leadership style that empowers staff through active communication and delegation, and promotes intra- and interdepartmental teamwork;
Focus on professional development; including performance measurements, individual coaching and team-building; foster an environment of achievement and ensure staff accountability for excellence through clearly defined and measurable goals;
Review and evaluate the current division operations and, if necessary, restructure to better meet mission and organizational objectives;
Institute a system of accountability and a constructive means of critical evaluation of the effectiveness and success of membership and engagement activities and programs; develop goals and objectives with measurable outcomes in support of the mission and community agenda.
Partner with and support the CEO, President, volunteer, Board and key professional leaders to ensure their efficiency and effectiveness as the organization’s chief spokespersons;
Provide a high level of support to board members and other key volunteers on membership-related activities in ways that inspire them to action and strengthen their intellectual and emotional commitment.
An established leader with at least 7-10 years of equivalent or relative experience with demonstrable achievements in management, both strategic and operational;
A dynamic, collaborative, and mentoring leader who inspires trust and respect;
Strong interpersonal skills with the intellectual and emotional depth, maturity and collaborative team-driven nature to partner effectively across the entire organization and externally with Hadassah partners;
Experience in recruiting, inspiring and leading a professional staff; ability to think creatively to break down silos and lead teams of diverse skills; success in increasing the effectiveness of staff through established objectives, performance standards and quantifiable benchmarks;
Experience with strategic planning, member or association recruitment and engagement strategies, direct mail and campaign design required; strength in all areas of developing and crafting meaningful programs and strategies for engagement at all age levels and in a wide array of settings;
Experience leading and driving cross-functional projects to successful completion;
Strong presentation skills, with the ability to share a passion for the mission and to inspire individuals and audiences; capable of clearly articulating a case for support;
An authentic commitment to the mission and goals of the organization; specifically to successfully managing the nature of volunteer engagement, participation and leadership;
A diplomatic problem solver able to build consensus and engender cooperation; adept at translating ideas and concepts into clear actionable items;
An entrepreneurial approach and the ability to thrive in a complex environment, creating both the development of a strategy and the execution of plans simultaneously.
