OVERVIEW: The Director of Education & Events is responsible for providing excellent educational programs and events for the members of CalSAE, primarily association executives and professional staff at all levels of management, as well as Industry Partners and suppliers to the association community. This position leads several volunteer committees in the development and implementation of an overall education plan. The position supervises the Manager of Meetings and Events (full time, regular employee) and reports directly to the President & CEO of CalSAE. This is an exempt position.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Education & Events is responsible for the strategies, programs and activities related to the education, training and learning opportunities provided to the membership of CalSAE. The position is also responsible for the overall strategic direction of various meetings and events that provide those learning opportunities. The position requires a collaborative approach in working with staff and volunteers to produce a well-coordinated and executed education plan.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Reviewing, modifying and implementing CalSAE’s Education Plan for the membership in conjunction with the Professional Development Committee. The Plan includes analysis and assessment of member needs and standards for all educational sessions (length, type, materials, visual aids, learning goals, etc.). This includes an understanding and application of industry trends for learning and events.
Providing learning opportunities and content management for each educational event and programs within the Education Plan. CalSAE provides approximately 120 CEUs annually. This includes creation and management of content, securing content leaders & panelists and design of programs and events that provide a balance of programming for the various segments of the CalSAE membership.
Ensuring relationship building opportunities for attendees are blended into each learning event and program.
Leading and supporting collaborative planning and implementation efforts with the staff team.
Providing leadership to or consultation with key volunteer groups in the development and implementation of the education plan, particularly the Professional Development Committee, along with the four regional councils, ELEVATE Annual Conference Committee, Seasonal Spectacular Committee and several task forces for specialty education events.
Developing and implementing a marketing plan for all education programs and events. Includes messaging, target marketing, design and marketing vehicles.
Development and oversight of the meetings and events budget (approximately $900,000).
Management of the assessment and evaluation surveys. Application of continuous improvement processes.
Organizing of the study groups and supporting candidates for the Certified Association Executive exam (CAE Study Groups).
Maintaining the CalSAE education and speaker roster.
Other duties as assigned.
Supervises the Manager of Meetings and Events, and all related activities. Includes all statewide and local education events, registration and marketing materials, exhibitor and sponsorship planning and acquisition, event committees and task forces, securing event locations and contracts, etc.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: CalSAE provides competitive salary and benefits. Compensation is benchmarked against the industry standards and will be determined based on candidate experience and qualifications.
The benefits for the position include:
Health Insurance. 100% paid for the employee, and shared 50% between employee and organization for any additional coverage above the single rate.
Vacation, Sick Leave and Holidays. Vacation begins at 80 hours per year, and moves to 120 hours at 2 years of employment and 160 hours at 5 years of employment. A total of 8 sick leave days are provided annually. All employees receive 11 ½ paid holidays during the year.
The organization pays 5% of salary into a 401 (k) plan during the first two years of service. The contribution rate increases to 7% at 5 years of service. The employee is immediately 100% vested and may make voluntary contributions to her/his plan.
Life and Disability Insurance. The employee receives employer paid life insurance policy and a long-term disability insurance policy.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
In-depth knowledge of adult learning concepts and instructional design. Includes awareness of individual learning styles, delivery methods and environments.
Excellent planning and management skills.
Knowledge and experience in meeting and event planning & implementation.
The ability to include diverse feedback in the planning and implementation process.
Leadership abilities in developing strong staff and volunteer partnerships.
Excellent communications skills – listening, speaking and writing.
Knowledge of the association field and overall trends.
Demonstrated use and knowledge of related technology (virtual meetings, data bases, survey instruments, etc.)
Well organized and strong time-management skills.
Knowledge of marketing and communications concepts.
5 years progressive experience in membership-based association that include responsibilities member education and related activities.
BA or BS degree (preferred in related field).
CAE or CMP designation preferred.
Valid Drivers License and proof of insurance.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
Communicates orally with members, volunteers, co-workers and the public in face-to-face, one-to-one settings by telephone, video conference and in group settings.
Sit at a desk for long periods of time.
Work in an office environment, lift and move objects up to 10 pounds such as large binders, books, and small office equipment.
Have sufficient finger/hand coordination and dexterity to operate and adjust office equipment such as telephone, computer and calculator.
Travel throughout the State to attend statewide and selected regional events (about once a month).
