The Energy & Mineral Law Foundation (EMLF or “Foundation”) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, established in 1979, to provide a source of scholarly information for attorneys and other professionals on the legal issues related to energy and natural resource development. The EMLF is primarily focused on the Eastern United States and offers educational programs in various locations which meet requirements for Continuing Legal Education credits as mandated by various state bar associations. EMLF members propose the topics and plan these programs presented by volunteer attorneys who are experts in their field. In addition, speakers at the EMLF Annual Institutes provide scholarly papers which are published annually in the Energy & Mineral Law Institute.
The EMLF is governed by a Board of Trustees, which meets annually at the time and place of the Annual Institute. The Executive Committee, drawn from the Board of Trustees, carries on the work of the Board when it is not in session. There are numerous other committees, which can be found on the website at http://www.emlf.org, along with the Strategic Plan. The EMLF is funded primarily by membership dues and registration fees from educational programs.
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation, according to the strategic direction set forth by the Board of Trustees and implemented by the Executive Committee. The Executive Director will operate with a hands-on approach and is responsible for actualizing the mission and vision of the Foundation as follows:
Leadership: Represent the EMLF at educational and industry events and develop professional relationships with leaders of those organizations; Serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Annual Institute publication, the Energy & Mineral Law Institute, including topic generation, final print publication and delivery to WestLaw for online availability, working with speakers to produce their work in a timely fashion, coordinating cite and source work, editing all manuscripts, working with speakers/authors as needed, working with graphic designer on technical issues, and indexing final work; Oversee the day-to-day operation of the organization, including outside sourcing for financial services, graphic design, publishing and printing services, and website management; Oversee the work of the various committees established to carry out the Strategic Plan (Membership, Programming, Finance, Governance, Law School, Technology, Succession Planning); Participate in the Strategic Planning Process for the Foundation; Coordinate and participate in all planning meetings and conference calls for committees, Special Institutes and Annual Institute topic development; Develop the annual operating budget in conjunction with the Executive Committee; Maintain the records of the organization, oversee the investment and scholarship accounts, and ensure that all financial reports and state and federal tax returns are prepared and filed in a timely fashion.
Educational Programs: Oversee, with input from the Executive Committee, the development of all educational program content by remaining current in energy and mineral law issues; Routinely read a variety of trade and energy law publications to understand business issues related to industry legal issues; Coordinate co-sponsored events with other organizations such as the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation and the Institute for Energy Law/ Center for American and International Law (IEL/CAIL).
Coordinate submission of topics, participate in the selection of program topics and speakers to ensure that programs are of the highest quality and meet the educational needs of the membership, and oversee the proper accreditation of programs for continuing legal education credits.
Develop program brochures to include collecting speaker content, working with graphic designer on layouts, program brochure content, proofing and meeting print deadlines.
Ensure that programs and services contribute to the EMLF’s mission, and monitor delivery of programs and services to maintain quality. Review all attendee evaluations following educational programs and make use of the information.
Coordinate fundraising efforts to support social events at educational programs.
Meeting Logistics: Select meeting venues through travel or Internet, negotiate and sign hotel contracts with details including room block commitments, room rates, concessions, registration deadlines, catering minimums, Audio/Visual. On site management of all details; Development of the fees and cost of tuition for educational programs.

Administrative: Identify and inform the Board or Executive Committee of internal and external issues that may affect the organization, such as conflicting or competitive programs, regulatory issues and market changes affecting membership; Communicate with membership via electronic newsletters, promotional brochures and information provided by the EMLF website; Oversee the collection of membership dues and participate in the determination of an appropriate dues structure.
Outreach: Oversee Law School outreach to include coordination and scheduling of Careers in Energy Law programs with law school placement offices, solicitation of volunteers to speak at programs, provide oversight of logistics for program presentations. For Law Student Scholarships, oversee the promotional information for the EMLF website, announcements in the EMLF Member News e-newsletter, arrange and participate in meeting of scholarship committee to select recipients, notify all applicants of the decisions of the scholarship committee, and ensure that scholarship awards are paid in a timely manner. Coordinate Schetroma Scholarship for law students at member law schools to attend EMLF Annual Institutes (to include travel and lodging expenses).
Bachelor’s degree required: Law degree or Graduate degree preferred
Minimum of 5 years of experience working in the industry
Excellent communication skills to include writing and editing
Previous experience leading an organization as a CEO, COO, President or Executive Director; or has served in a capacity working closely with Boards
Previous experience with the non-profit sector, either as a leader within an organization or as an active Board member
Demonstrated success working with various personalities to achieve consensus
Ability to travel to promote the Foundation’s interests in areas within the Foundation’s footprint
Ability to work well under pressure
Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize, coordinate and simultaneously maintain multiple projects with high level of quality and productivity
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to work with minimal supervision and make independent decisions
