This position is responsible for communicating the benefits of chiropractic by working with the media to provide information and/or arrange interviews with ACA media spokespersons for articles and broadcasts that reinforce the ACA brand and demonstrate that chiropractors are evidence-based, collaborative, educated, ethical and competent in treating musculoskeletal disorders. The communications associate will share updates in insurance, advocacy, public policy, communications and research with ACA membership and non-members via ACA publications and social media. As well, he/she will provide writing and editing, as needed, to support other ACA departments and create new resources for members and effectively use ACA’s communications tools (ACA Connects, social media accounts, etc.) to promote ACA initiatives – including National Chiropractic Health Month and ACA’s annual conference -- in an effort to raise awareness and increase participation.
Public/Media Relations: 25%
Monitor the media daily (via Google Alerts/Critical Mention/Help a Reporter Out, etc.) to identify positive/relevant placements, trends and potential problems.
Field media inquires and provide requested information or set up interviews with ACA spokespersons and other qualified members.
Nuture relationships with the media by pitching ideas and responding to placements, when appropriate.
Look for opportunities for ACA to weigh in on important public health and policy issues and write news releases, letters or other responses as needed.
Write and distribute ACA news releases and feature releases.
Work regularly with the editor of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) to write news releases and/or short summaries about research studies published in JMPT that would be of interest to the press and general public and/or the chiropractic profession.
Maintain and update media lists.
Respond to requests from members of the public for information and resources.
Maintain and regularly update the “ACA Pressroom” section of the ACA website.
Social media (25%)
Queue up regular posts in Hootsuite on ACA’s Facebook pages, as well as on its Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts.
Share positive or relevant content from the news media, social media and ACA’s member communications with social media followers.
Post seasonal content on ACA’s social media channels according to the ACA Content Strategy document.
Collaborate with internal ACA staff to gather content for this weekly enewsletter (7 to 9 items per issue usually)
Identify upcoming ACA news and events that need promotion in the newsletter.
Write summaries and do first-round editing of newsletter before sending to senior VP and VP to make final edits.
Gather, edit and review content for this monthly e-newsletter, featuring consumer information
Format content in newsletter template and schedule for distribution.
Write, edit and update ACA consumer fact sheets
Repond to member inquiries for information and ACA resources
Set up and send out JMPT eblast promotion and monthly ACA blog promotion.
Assist with other projects in the department, such as National Chiropractic Health Month, as needed.
Set up, edit and send e-blasts from marketing/membership or other departments, as needed.
EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
2-3 years of communications experience and a Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications and/or public relations is required.
Knowledge and skills in the following areas:
Communications, public relations, journalism
Health care industry
Strong computer skills with experience in Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Word, PPT, Excel, etc.)
Proficiency in common social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Hootsuite
Familiarity with additional platforms a plus: Real Magnet, Higher Logic, Meltwater, Google Alerts, Google Analytics
Strong written and oral communication skills
