General Statement of Duties: The Manager of Communications creates, advances and manages communications and content programs that effectively articulate SIA’s mission and objectives and promote the organization and the security industry – and does so with a metrics-driven focus, creating measurable impact. This role is responsible for media relations, social media, content contributions, web content, communications plans and tactics, our e-newsletters, and other activities as assigned by director. The Manager of Communications also leads our member community discussion platform SIA360, and may also be asked to take the lead on select marketing initiatives, particularly those which require the management of an individual seasoned in communications.
Responsibilities: Public and Media Relations With support and guidance from Director of Marketing, craft overarching media relations strategy for SIA. Define and develop metrics to evaluate PR strategies. Develop communications plan outlining strategy, deliverables and timelines. Develop, cultivate and manage media relationships with both trade and consumer media; maintain very regular contact and communication with key media entities and relevant business press; serve as primary media contact for SIA.
Develop relationships and work collaboratively marketing and communications team members at SIA member companies.
Proactively offer story ideas that advance SIA’s communication objectives to trade and commercial press.
Manage relationships with outside media/public relations services and partner with relevant groups to position SIA effectively through a variety of media vehicles. Regularly assess vendors for compliance with contracted deliverables and overall satisfaction with services. Write, edit and distribute press releases on a regular basis; seek opportunities to provide editorial content and stories for placement through aggressive, proactive media relations strategies. Provide opportunities for SIA staff interaction with media, including interviews and story formulation.
Prepare monthly marketing outreach report.
Communications and Content Marketing Serve as the editor and manage the production and distribution of SIA’s communication vehicles, including the SIA website, blog, email newsletters and other digital content. Seek opportunities to enhance marketing strategies through SIA’s communication vehicles. Author and source original content for all of SIA’s communications channels. Ensure the accuracy of SIA content in all of SIA’s communications channels. Manage projects for marketing team, ensuring deliverables are completed on time and within budget
Develop new strategies and sources for editorial content, delivery methods and feedback mechanisms. Link readers to SIA’s website and other vehicles when possible and appropriate. Write and edit emails and other communications as required. Support and collaborate regularly with SIA staff; seek and fulfill opportunities to communicate SIA’s programming, benefits, products and services to members and industry stakeholders. Regularly solicit fresh content from SIA staff and member companies to establish newsletter and website as indispensable resources to members and the industry. Participate and lead the review of original web content as part of the SIA staff content committee. Assist marketing department in the development and enforcement of consistent, comprehensive graphic and stylistic standards for all electronic and printed communications. Keep up to date with website, social media and other online technologies, trends and best practices. Assist with development of online strategies.
Social Media Develop and implement a social media strategy along with the Director of Marketing, and coordinate with stakeholders across the organization to ensure its effectiveness. Manage social media campaigns and day-to-day activities. Manage presence in social networking sites including Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and other similar community sites, posting on relevant blogs, and seeding content into social applications as needed. Become an advocate of the organization in social media spaces, engaging in dialogues and answering questions where appropriate. Monitor effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of social media programs, and analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of campaigns to maximize results. Regularly provide insights gained from social media monitoring into the Marketing and Member Services teams, to help them evolve their strategies in a timely fashion.
Community Management • _Serve as community manager of our SIA360, our online membership community. • _Develop strategies which help drive member adoption of the SIA360 community.
General Support of SIA Marketing • _Support all SIA marketing efforts, especially tradeshows and SIA events. • _Contribute to and grow our membership database, and leverage this database for marketing.
Other Duties as Assigned
Requirements: • _Four-year college degree in communications, public relations, marketing, creative services, or other relevant fields. • _A minimum of five (5) years of communications, PR or marketing experience. • _Extensive experience with print, online and social media engagement strategies • _Extremely strong interpersonal, written and oral communications skills • _Highly personable: Must be able to develop relationships with media and be able win and retain the confidence and support of SIA staff and member companies. • _Competency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). • _Direct experience in an association, or handling communications in a technology-driven business or industry is preferable. • _High level of quality standards and attention to detail; ability to meet changing deadlines and manage multiple, concurrent projects. • _Highly organized and a champion of proactive project management. • _Must be a team player, self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision. Able to cross train within the marketing department. • _Able to always represent self and SIA in a professional manner and exercise high levels of customer service quality in all interactions. • _Some travel required.
