Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles is seeking a committed, charismatic and visionary leader for the position of President and CEO.
About Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles
Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles was founded on the notion of "one child, one wish" in 1983. Since that time, the organization has brightened the lives of more than 9,500 children with a wide range of life-threatening medical conditions.
The idea to form Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles was generated from an article in the TRW Company Newsletter. Los Angeles sales representative Michael Lewis was waiting for his meeting to begin when he read the article about a charity in Phoenix, Arizona that was doing wonderful things for sick children.
He rushed home and gathered together a group who began working with the Phoenix office to set up a chapter in the Greater Los Angeles area, which was incorporated as the 15th chapter in the national network on April 1, 1983.
In that first year, 12 wishes were granted, including the chapter's inaugural for 11-year-old Gary from Ventura who wished for a VCR of his own. Volunteers presented the new VCR and one year of complimentary video rentals to him while he was still in the hospital. His smile became the first of many for Make-A-Wish Greater Los Angeles.
While medical technology and treatments have allowed the children we serve to lead longer lives, we continue to strive towards our ultimate mission of fulfilling a wish for every child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in Los Angeles County.
The group that Mike Lewis worked with in Phoenix became Make-A-Wish America, the national organization.
The History of Make-A-Wish
One of our nation's leading nonprofits, Make-A-Wish America (Make-A-Wish) serves a unique and vital, role in helping strengthen and empower children battling life-threatening medical conditions.
Founded in 1980, Make-A-Wish has inspired a nation. In 2016, more than 270,000 children in the United States and its territories have benefited from the hope, strength and joy of experiencing a child's one heartfelt wish. Make-A-Wish granted over 15,000 wishes last year alone–on average, one every 35 minutes. But for every wish granted, another child is diagnosed with a potentially qualifying condition: a child who needs a wish.
Make-A-Wish America is a federated network of sixty-two Chapters throughout the United States and its territories. The organization establishes guidelines for wish-granting standards, raises funds at a national level, provides legal support, develops strategies to advance awareness and establishes the overall direction for the organization. Chapters throughout the United States serve every community across the nation and its territories each with its own Board of Directors, staff and volunteers.
Today, Make-A-Wish International is the hub for wish-granting activities in nearly 50 countries, outside of the United States, on five continents and counting.
