Reporting to the VP, External Relations and as a member of his/her direct reports team, the position oversees the comprehensive communications program for the Salk Institute that further enhances the Institute’s local, regional, national, and international reputation as a world leader in basic biological research. Position manages media relations, publications, audio-visual and graphic arts services, and public relations for the Institute. Incumbent is directly responsible for the supervision and management of all personnel and budgetary activity in the Communications & Multi-Media (MMR) Departments.
Incumbent must be a creative thinker with presence and poise to work effectively with all levels of the Institute. Will establish and maintain the strategic planning process and organizational structure for the Communications/MMR team. Must be self-directed and have the knowledge, intellect and temperament to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Must possess excellent written and verbal skills, as well as experience dealing with the media.
Incumbent must be a skilled and experienced senior level manager of Communications and Multi-Media teams while simultaneously flourishing in a hands-on role that includes writing, editing, and program implementation. Incumbent brings energy, focus, and inspiration to the Institute and is a credible mentor, relationship builder and strong leader with a history of meeting goals. Has the ability to grasp scientific research and concepts and understand the role that the Communications Department plays with regard to the Institute's overall goals and objectives.
Serves as the primary contact with the media, meets regularly with President to ensure consistency of messaging and supports the President with talking points and presentation needs.
Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or other related discipline.
Advanced degree in Business, Marketing, Strategic Communications, or other discipline relevant to this role.
10+ years of experience in increasingly responsible communications, public relations or client relations positions.
5+ years of functional/program management
5-7 years of personnel management.
Demonstrated experience creating and implementing strategic plans for successful internal and external communications programs and media outreach.
Demonstrated experience formulating budgets, prioritizing projects, programs, and activities, using sound judgment while meeting the organizational requirements and being accountable for their success.
Extensive writing and editing experience for a variety of internal and external audiences.
Experience identifying, selecting and effectively using outsourced resources for a variety of writing, creative, and media-related needs.
Experience with communications strategy development and crisis management.
Able to work a flexible schedule based on workload and deadlines.
Ability to travel and work nights/weekends as needed.
Satisfactory completion of the Institute’s background investigation.
Must sign an employee confidentiality agreement.
Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
